Yup! We want to bring Toki Tori 2 to Wii U!

Update 18: Wii U Plans!

People who’ve followed us in recent years know we’re pretty big fans of Nintendo. We’ve made games for Game Boy, DS and Wii that were released both in shops and on digital services. The first Toki Tori was a launch game for the original WiiWare download service in 2008 and today we’ve decided that we are going to do everything in our power to make sure Toki Tori 2 graces Nintendo’s upcoming HD console as well!

You may wonder why we decided this just now. Nintendo recently released information on their online strategy, which sounds much more robust than before. The 3DS eShop has been a big step in the right direction compared to the Wii and DSi online shops, and it would be strange if they did not at least match it’s functionality on Wii U. Since Toki Tori 2 is designed to be a downloadable title, these things are vital to making the correct choice of which platforms to develop for.

So how are we going to tackle this? Up until now we could just focus on the initial release for Steam, where we decided to go for traditional directional controls on keyboard or joypad. The translation of those controls to the Wii U controller should be smooth sailing as it features two analogue sticks and we only need two buttons for the whistle and stomp moves. But the Wii U controller offers many more options of course.

We would definitely include playing on the Wii U controller directly without the need for a TV. Toki Tori 2 has been designed with minimal use for a graphical user interface, so the game should be perfectly playable on the controller’s smaller widescreen display. As for the motion controls, we don’t think Toki Tori needs those and adding them to the game as it is currently designed does not make much sense.

What could be very interesting, and what’s been requested countless times from the fans, is if we could incorporate a level editor utilizing the Wii U controller. This could mean that the game runs on the TV while you make adjustments to the level on the touchscreen in real time. We think that would work really well!

But this is pure speculation at this point, since there is nothing known about the Wii U’s ability to share and store levels at this point. In any case, we are excited and will do everything in our power to make sure you get to play Toki Tori 2 on Wii U!

Yaaaaayyyyy. I will make a commitment now: I will buy it as soon as I can.

foxdark22, Thursday February 9 2012, 20:21

Nice! Not sure if I'm going to buy a Wii U yet, but IF I do, I am definitely going to get Toki Tori for it.

PolloDiablo, Thursday February 9 2012, 20:41

So you're already fiddeling with the Wii U right now?

Manny, Thursday February 9 2012, 20:51

YES. Nintendo fanboy here.

foxdark22, Thursday February 9 2012, 20:58

Finally!! This was just what I was wishing for.

Sounds like the different mechanics might warrant getting both the PC and WiiU versions. Very cool.

Somewhat related: Have you guys ever considered releasing the original Game Boy Toki Tori on the 3DS Virtual Console?

TheHappyCog, Friday February 10 2012, 0:39

When can I buy this? I am willing to give all my money NOW.

Chris, Friday February 10 2012, 4:53

I second that...for the orignal toki tori for the 3ds virtual console service. I have toki tori for wiiware and android, Im really excided for toki tori 2 on wiiU :D

Cakes, Friday February 10 2012, 7:07

I'm only interested by the PC version.
I hope that also doing a Wii U version won't delay the release of Toki Tori 2 on PC.
;-)

Akbalder, Friday February 10 2012, 12:34

This is Great news!!! I will def buy this as soon as it comes out on the WiiU. Platformers like these belong on nintendo machines I reckon, It's the place to go for awesome Platforming experience in my opinion. I am really excited for this and I second a release of the original on the 3DS, perhaps a remake! Keep up the good work twotribes!

Andre, Saturday February 11 2012, 4:39

@andre

I think Toki Tori in its current state is already a remake of the game boy color original. So that leaves *hint* a rerelease of it on 3DS virtual console as the only option left.

Personally I'm not so interested in the Wii U (already have a wii), but... Is that picture of TT on the wii U an ingame screenshot of TT2? :o It looks really cool! (especially the water with the floating bubblefrog on it :)

@Daan

That is indeed what we're striving for. We may have to ditch the fake perspective, but that's for a later time.

Collin, Monday February 13 2012, 17:08

What about a 3ds version?

juli, Friday February 17 2012, 19:29

@Akbalder
In my case it's the complete opposite, I hope they delay the PC version so they can release the Wii U version faster. This series started on a Nintendo platform to begin with anyway.

Wildo09, Saturday March 10 2012, 4:23

I for one am all for a version for the Wii U. I can't wait to buy that system.

I just bought a PSVita so would there be any chance of Toki Tori 2 on that system too? That way I can play it on the WII U tablet at home then on the go with the Vita.

@COOL
Wouldn't it make more sense for it to be on the 3DS though? Considering Toki Tori has never been on a Sony platform and it's hard to sell things that are not bloody on them.

Charlie Rolborn, Sunday March 11 2012, 2:20

@ Charlie Rolborn

I see no reason you could not have the game come out on both the Vita & 3DS. I bought the Vita & I have Rayman Origins & Hot Shots Golf. I can't wait to buy Gravity Daze & Little King's Story 2. I also plan on picking up Ys IV & Tales of Innocence R. Yet none of those games are M rated or bloody. So I see no reason Toki Tori 2 could not come out on the Vita.

I am not trying to knock down the 3DS. I think TT2 could look really nice in 3D on the 3DS. I just don't have a 3DS right now. So a Vita version would be better for me right now. Then when the Wii U comes out & I get that system I can get it on that system too.

Cool, Monday March 12 2012, 0:11

@COOL

Of course it'll be great if it's released on both! I just thought that it'll be unfair if it's released on the Vita and not on the 3DS, since the series started on the Game Boy and all, but having it on both will be the best possible scenario. Excellent taste of games btw! You are one of the rare PS owners that seems to prefer good japanese games than all that fps and cinematic crap nowadays.

Charlie Rolborn, Monday March 12 2012, 0:25

This game is clon of MSX?????

surrendino, Tuesday June 26 2012, 20:31

@surrendino

In a very very distant past, there was Eggbert. Toki Tori was based on Eggbert, but Toki Tori 2 is quite different :)

Collin, Tuesday June 26 2012, 21:35

@charlie: toki tori is available for PS3 on PSN.

A Vita version would be great, perhaps something can be done with Playstation Mobile/Playstation Suite?
